Camping with kids in Colorado is big FUN!

Lake Baldwin in Colorado - Elevation 12,088

Every kid remembers their very first real camping trip. I’m not talking about a tent in the backyard but a real camping trip up in the Colorado high country. I highly suggest it if you are looking for fun things to do with your kids.

Campsite

Campsite

Last week my 5 year old son and I took a two night camping trip up to Mount Antero outside Buena Vista, Colorado with our great friends and neighbors Steve & Connor Smith.

Adventure Hike around the lake

Adventure Hike around the lake

This was a full on guys camping trip which included the following: adventure hikes, campfires, fishing, NEW pocket knifes for the boys, (all fingers made it home fine) marsh mellows, steak cooked over an open fire, panning for gold in the river, BB gun shooting, a true Colorado weather event with hail, sleet and rain all at once, hiking on a glacier, and yes the coveted brand new wrist rockets (That video is funny) otherwise known as sling shots. Steve & I actually dominated the playing time with the sling shots as we were hurling stones into the lake about 100 yards away. I highly recommend wrist rockets for your next camping trip!

No matter where you decide to go Steve & I both decided that we were going to make every effort on our part to make sure the boys had a great time, were safe and stayed warm.

It can be a daunting task for some kids to jump out of the high tech world we live in and into nature where there are no electronics to entertain them at their whim. Both boys were excellent and not one single complaint was filed about not having a TV or other comforts of home. I was very happy.

The road up to this campsite was about 1.5 hours of serious 4 wheel drive action. Some of it probably not doable in a smaller SUV with low ground clearance. However or wherever you decide to go isn’t the issue. The main thing is that you get out and enjoy your kids and the Colorado back country.

I still remember my first big camping trip with my Dad and I’m sure these kids will too. It’s amazing how in such a short period of time and at a young age a lifetime of memories can be made. We have been home for over a week now and my son has asked to go camping just about everyday so I’m sure another trip is just around the corner.

“There will always be work excuses and reasons to put off a great trip like this. Life is way too short and we have entirely too little time with our kids as young people to not do something like this. Work can wait so go have fun!”

Parker Days Starts Today. Carnival Fun in Parker Colorado

Jun 11th 10

Parker Days Carnival

Parker Days Carnival

Parker Colorado | Parker Days

Parker Days Starts today June 11, 12 & 13th.

Parker Days is a big carnival held each year right here in Parker Colorado. Kids across Douglas County look forward to this each and every summer.

They set it up differently this year so be prepared. All the rides are now up on the hill away from the center of town. Up by the RTD parking lot.

The arts and crafts and food booths are still in the center of town and in O’Brien Park.

TIPS:

  • Make sure to bring your own water. Drink and food lines are long and the carnival food stinks. Except the funnel cakes.
  • Load up on sunscreen. Being up on the hill this year we should have a decent breeze but the sun is still going to cook you.
  • Go early or late. Mid day is packed. The teenagers inhabit the park at night so the lull between the teens and mid day is usually good.
  • Strollers are a must for small kids. Especially now that they have moved the rides up the hill from town.

Parking:

Hopefully they will allow us to use the RTD station up near the rides. It looks like behind Parker Station may also be available but they had a guy standing there checking to see if you were a Parker Station visitor or Carnival visitor.

The always good parking across from O’Brien Park on the West side of Parker Road is easy too. Just walk through the tunnel instead of trying to cross Parker Road. Safer and easier.

More fun things to do with kids.

Feb 14th 10

filed under: Fun Things to Do, Just Cool Photos

Took the kids to the Monster truck Jam in Denver over the weekend. They loved it. We all had a blast and it wasn’t very expensive. At least until we valet parked for $20 but to be honest we couldn’t pass up the front row parking by the door when it was so cold out and we were a little late.

If you are looking for fun things to do I highly suggest it.

Buffalo Bill’s Grave Lookout Mtn Denver CO -Fun things to do

Jan 31st 10

Buffalo Bill's Headstone

Looking for an afternoon of fun things to do with your kids in the Denver Metro area?

Head up to Buffalo Bill’s grave site. They have a movie, (TAKE CASH) memorabilia, gifts, souvenirs and of course junk but the views and learning experiance will have the kids asking questions all the way home. My 4 year old now wants to be a buffalo hunter, Army man that rides a horse.

The views alone are worth the trip. you can see to Woming on a clear day and Boulder looks so close you feel like you can touch it.

You can easily get there from I-70 or C-470 right in Golden. Just follow the signs up Lookout Mountain to the guest services building. It’s all well marked.

A Perfect Landing Restaurant

More fun things to do with kids around Parker Colorado. I took the photo with my iPhone and the windows are tinted so it didn’t come out as good as I had hoped.

Centennial Airport in Centennial Colorado. We are eating breakfast at the Perfect Landing Restaurant. This is a great place to take kids to eat breakfast and let the kids watch the planes takeoff and land. My son loves this place.

I have a mountain bike I came across and wanted to try and get it to a kid here in the Parker area that may not have a bike. I think this is a girls moiuntain bike. Yep it is a Specialized too which means it isn’t a cheap bike. I will have the bike totally tuned up and cleaned and it should make a great Christmas present. If you know a kid or family in need please call or email me.
