A Guided Fly Fishing Trip Makes for a Fun Day in Colorado
If you want to have fun in Colorado try fly fishing. This Parker Colorado real estate broker had a super fun day. Anytime you fish remember fishing with kids is big fun and kids really learn a lot about the Colorado way of life which is to love and respect and of course protect the great outdoors. We didn’t take kids with us on this day but we sure had fun fishing The North Fork of the Platte River on the North Fork Ranch. We actually fished a private section call The Meadows with Guide Tad Howard the Owner of Colorado Trout Hunters. More about Tad later…
Come November it will be one year since I lost one of my very best friends Jerry Gregory. He died tragically on a beautiful weekend morning by falling off his mule while riding with his wife Sue down in Wescliffe Colorado. Since moving to Colorado I can say that just about everything I ever did outside that involved hunting or fishing was with Jerry. It’s been tough to get back into fishing or hunting without him.
A few weeks ago Jerry’s son Brian called me and asked if I would join him on a day trip with a guide to the river and spot where he last fished with his Dad. It was the last day he spent with his dad before he died last year. He had taken Jerry there for his birthday and they had a blast.
The night before our trip Brian sent me an email telling me don’t bring my net unless it can hold at least a 20 inch fish. I laughed and didn’t respond. I assumed he was just joking. NOPE he was telling the truth. Barely a fish caught under 20 inches all day. For me this was huge. I had never caught a trout in a river that large before. The public waters I have fished just didn’t have huge fish in them or maybe I just didn’t get them? For a full day we fished as hard as two guys could and I caught and landed more fish than ever before. Thanks mostly to Tad Howard our truly professional guide.
Tad Howard of Colorado Trout Hunters is a super nice guy and without a doubt the best guide, and fish spotter you will ever come across. Just walking the sides of the river he can spot fish and tell you exactly where to cast and 99% of the time I never saw the fish even when he told me where to cast and exactly where to look. I don’t know how he does it but he can see fish most people just cannot see. It has to be the years of experience on the river that give him this ability. Tad would say…
“walk over here beside me and be still. There are 4 fish together over there and 2 in that area. The biggest fish is over in the spot just ahead of the 4 fish together. Go for the big one then we’ll go for the small ones.”
Tad was dead on every time! When I cast he would tell me to recast the instant my fly would pass the fish. I didn’t even know my bait had past the fish yet but he did. Many times I would catch the fish on the first cast if it was an accurate cast but no matter what the fish was always right where he said it was. It was an unbelievable experience and one that everyone that likes to fish should try.

Jerry would have loved it as we did and I can say for sure he was right there with us the entire time.
